If you need pharmacological treatments (sporadic, for example a painkiller for a temporary illness or medicines for a targeted disease), interventions or health checks, contact your doctor to check their compatibility with breastfeeding, as a small amount of medical principles may pass to your baby through your milk. If you have any doubts about the medicines you are taking while breastfeeding, you may also contact your pharmacy.
In most cases, you will be able to continue breastfeeding your baby or you will be prescribed medicines compatible with breastfeeding.
Just to give you some indications, we tell you what is compatible with breastfeeding:
- natural remedies (e.g. herbal creams);
- probiotics;
- birth control remedies (to be agreed with your doctor or midwife);
- asthma inhalers;
- vaccinations (always ask your doctor for advice);
- dental care, even with anaesthesia;
- radiological investigations;
- investigations conducted precisely on the breast (needle aspiration, biopsies, etc ...)
When breastfeeding, you should always ask your doctor for advice, as well as read the related leaflet before using any medication.
